Framing Photochromics: 4 Simple Tips for Picking the Perfect Frame for a Light-Reactive Lens

Photochromics are a great choice for a variety of your patients. But sometimes, picking the right frame for a light-reactive lens can be a bit tricky. As an optician, your patients look to you to put them in a pair of glasses that fit right, suit their lifestyle, and of course, help them see better.
To help you help them, we asked 20-year optical veteran Chris Nichols, ABO, for her advice on selecting the ideal frame for a photochromic.
Click through the slideshow below to see her four frame styling fundamentals:
- Color is Key - Whether they select their lens color first, or head straight to the frame board, it’s essential to consider the activated lens color when helping your patient choose a frame. If they’re leaning towards a gray lens, then a cooler frame color (black, white, gray, silver, or blue) pairs well. If they opt for a brown lens, warmer frame tones (brown, gold, tan, yellow, green, and red) are more complementary.
- Select a Sunglass-Style Frame - Sunglass styles are fun, provide better lens coverage when dark, and look very fashionable with a clear lens. A great way to demo a sunglass frame for a photochromic is to have your patient try them on with the sun lenses in them. This will allow them to see what the frame will look like with the lenses activated. Then remove the sun lenses and have the patient try them with no lenses to see what they would look like in the inactive/clear state.
- Choose the Right Frame for the Job - If you’re recommending a photochromic for occupational purposes, functionality might be the deciding factor. A construction worker might benefit from a more durable, flexible frame, whereas a realtor or salesperson may base their choice on style. A lifestyle questionnaire is an ideal tool to help you pair a patient with a frame that works great for them.
- Choose the Right Frame for the Hobby - Photochromics are tailor made for a variety of hobbies. Whether your patient is a DIYer, a weekend warrior, or a road warrior, the right frame choice can provide added comfort, longevity, and style. Again, refer to their lifestyle questionnaire answers to help unite patient and frame in perfect harmony.
